In the main event of UFC Fight night 61, former champion Frank Mir and Brazilian Antonio Silva went head-to-head at the Gigantinho Gymnasium in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil for a heavyweight bout.
Mir (16-9) has been less than impressive in his recent Octagon outings and was on a four-fight losing streak coming into the bout. Mir needed a win in a big way if he wanted to keep any form of relevancy moving into the twighlight of his career.
For Silva (18-6-1), Sunday offered an opportunity for the local favorite to bounce back from a brutal knockout loss in 2014.
Silva has been 0-2-1 in his last three Octagon appearances, two knockout losses and a draw against Mark Hunt in a 2013 Fight of the Year candidate, so he was in need of a win just as much as Mir.
Play-by-play coverage of the bout below.
Round 1: Frank Mir moved to the center of the cage pawing out his jab to start the fight, while Bigfoot Silva was staying defensive and looking for a counter strike. Mir was able to land a huge left hook that dropped Silva to the mat. As soon as Silva crumbled, Mir delivered some vicious ground-and-pround - some big elbows - that forced Mario Yamasaki to bring an end to the fight.
Official Result: Frank Mir def. Antonio Silva via knockout (punches) – Round 1, 1:40
